MeiMei + Me

Crawling to climbing, beach to birthday party.

For the first birthday of my granddaughter, Lisl Zhang Miller AKA MeiMei (“little sister” in Chinese) I designed and made three dresses and sent them to Bali, Indonesia, where my son Alex Miller, daughter-in-law Yan Zhang Miller, and grandchildren Dion and Lisl were living. Everyone loved the dresses so much that I decided to create a full line and have them professionally made there in Balinese cotton prints and batiks by a local dressmaker.

My graphic design studio became a mini fashion design studio with two racks of dresses.
Exciting to shop in Denpasar’s wholesale fabric district with dressmaker Angeliqa Wu in order to bring to life the MeiMei+Me concept of “whimsical mixed patterns”: Checks and pin dots paired with florals, large abstract florals paired with traditional batiks. If you’d asked me at age seven “what do you want to be when you grow up?” the answer was “fashion designer.” That’s when I began sewing doll clothes. In junior high I started making my own clothes—choosing fabrics at the local JCPenney. Getting back into fashion design could not have been more fun.
It’s hard not to fall in love with Balinese laces.
One of the most enjoyable parts of this process is photographing the daughters of our friends and neighbors in MeiMei dresses. Each child gets a Balinese stuffed animal or a matching dress for her doll.

My first and most enthusiastic model was my granddaughter Lisl. This photo, by daughter-in-law Yan — a professional portrait and wedding photographer — was shot on her first birthday. It became the cover of the lookbook.

Lookbook PDF here

Four typical spreads of the lookbook, showing each dress in silhouette, on a model, on a mannequin, and with close-ups of fabric and trim samples. Black-and-white checked fabric is spiritually significant in Bali, and the text describes the cultural context.

Still life by Tim Grajeck of the MeiMei+Me design and brand elements: dress itself, lookbook, hangtags and labels.

Handmade in Bali,” as the hangtags say,” is really true. Every dress is cut and finished by hand. Especially the decorative let-down hems that grow with the child. To see the whole line and shop, please visit http://HeyBaliBaby.etsy.com
